Basement waterproofing is often known as "tanking". This is carried out to prevent unwanted water from entering; this is a common problem as they usually lie below the water level. This kind of waterproofing often takes place when converting a basement into a living space, without this your surfaces are prone to cracks caused by ground water movement.
Waterproofing basements is often difficult, as they are below ground level. Ground water can put pressure on the walls and can often make cellars and basements uninhabitable. Tanking works by creating a barrier on the inside wall to prevent water from getting in.
There are two main methods of basement waterproofing are called cementitious and membrane tanking systems.
Cementitious tanking is usually undertaken when there is only slight entry of water expected to enter through external walls. Walls are stripped back to their original brick form where layers of render are applied and left to dry, a coat of plaster can then be applied as a finishing coat.
Membrane tanking is used where a high water levels occur and can be applied where ever necessary including walls, floors and ceilings. All damaged plaster will be removed and the membrane can then be fixed to the wall using specialised plugs. All joins will then be sealed to ensure there is no entry of water and walls are coated with a finishing plaster.
The benefits of these systems are not only that your basement will become a liveable and create extra space, but will also add value to the price of your home.
