Different types of damp

Friday 1st November 2013 12:52

There are several different types of damp that you may have in your home and it is important to know the difference. Whilst the symptoms may be similar, the causes can be very different, and so can the treatment that is required. A misdiagnosis may be expensive and may not fix the problem. So how can you be sure that you are are using the correct treatment for your damp problem? Here is some advice that may help:

Rising Damp

Rising damp occurs when moisture that is present in the ground is drawn up through the brickwork of your home. Some of the symptoms can include; damp patches up to 1 metre from the ground, decaying skirting boards, peeling wallpaper and tidemarks on the wall.

To ensure that rising damp is present, a thorough examination should be carried out by one of our professionals to determine the exact cause of the problem. It may be necessary to replace the old damaged plaster and use a chemical damp course treatment.

Penetrating damp

Penetrating damp is caused when an water source is leaking on to the external walls. The most common example is a broken drain pipe. Whilst it can be relatively simple to fix, it is important not to mistake it for rising damp. This can be an expensive mistake which will not solve the problem.

The symptoms of penetrating damp may include; random damp patches on the wall, musty smells and damp patches on the external wall. It is important to find the cause of the damp and fix it. It may be necessary to replace the plaster if it is damaged.

Condensation

Condensation occurs due to every day moisture that is produced in the home. As the temperature drops, the moisture condenses on cool surfaces, such as your walls and windows. It is usually identifiable when moisture collects on non-absorbant surfaces, such as windows or tiles.

The best treatment for condensation is to use your central heating sensibly and to have an effective ventilation system. This will prevent the moisture from having the opportunity to collect on a surface. At Beneck Preservations, we are experts in condensation control and have a wide range of ventilation systems on offer.
